Business Analysis Career Paths

The typical progression from junior BA to senior BA to management — and the choices you'll make at each transition.

Junior BA

Working under the guidance of a senior BA or PM. Primary responsibilities: gathering and documenting requirements, analysing business processes, attending project meetings, and building foundational skills. Typical NZD salary: $65–85k.

Intermediate BA

More autonomy and responsibility. Leading your own workstream, managing requirements independently, designing solutions, and coordinating project activities without supervision. Typical NZD salary: $85–115k.

Senior BA

Extensive delivery experience. Leading large-scale or complex projects, mentoring junior BAs, engaging executive stakeholders without oversight, and influencing how analysis is done across the organisation. Typical NZD salary: $115–150k. Contracting: $900–1,600+/day.

Management or Consulting

Overseeing multiple projects, managing teams of BAs, and providing strategic advice to clients or executives. Requires strong leadership and business development skills in addition to BA expertise. This is a different career track — not simply the next step for every senior BA.
