Permanent vs Contracting

💼 Permanent

+

Stable income — salary paid fortnightly regardless of project status

+

KiwiSaver / superannuation contributions from employer

+

Annual and sick leave entitlements

+

Easier to get a mortgage — lenders prefer permanent income

Lower ceiling — permanent roles cap below contractor day rates

Less flexibility over the work you take on

📈 Contracting

+

$900–$1,600+/day NZD for mid to senior BAs

+

Variety — work across industries and organisations

+

Tax flexibility via a company structure

Gaps between contracts — income is not guaranteed

No employer contributions to KiwiSaver or leave

Less suitable for those early in their BA career

Rule of thumb: Most BAs stay permanent for their first 5–7 years to build experience and credibility, then consider contracting once they have a strong reputation and network.
